This is a Portuguese Man o' War [Physalia physalis]. When I was about 9 years old,
I lived in Kailua, Oahu, Hawaii which is located on the north eastern side of the island.
Occasionally, these things would float in and cover the beach forcing people to stay away.
Most of the time though, you would just spot one floating around and try to avoid it.
In my case, I failed to avoid one when I was paddling around on a rubber mattress.
The sting is horrible! They're not fatal (unless there's a reaction) so you just pour some
alcohol on the sting and sit it out for about 45 mins, I was in agony.
